Plain answers about water damage in Boise City
Most questions land in four places: what to do in the first hour, how long drying takes, what it costs and what insurance does. Short version: stop the source, stay clear of wet outlets, call, and get the price in writing. Drying often runs several days for a room, set by the readings.

The first hour
Where is my main water shut-off?
In many houses it is where the line enters the garage, basement or crawl space, or near the water heater. Find it on a dry day and turn it once to see that it works. A stiff valve should not be forced.
Is it safe to wade into a wet basement?
Not if water has reached an outlet, the panel, the furnace or the water heater. If the power question is unclear, stay out and say so on the call. Water that came up a drain needs boots and gloves at least.
Should I pull up wet carpet myself?
Wait for a meter reading if you can. Clean-water carpet may dry in place, and cutting early can spread contamination. Photograph first, then lift valuables and call.
Freezes, canals and rivers
Why did my pipe leak after the weather warmed up?
Ice can plug a crack, and the water only flows once it melts. Check ceilings, wall bases and cabinets on outside walls after any hard freeze, and close the main if you hear water inside a wall.
Who do I call when a canal floods my yard?
The irrigation district or canal operator that controls the water, such as the Boise Project Board of Control for its network. Then call a crew to pump and dry, and tell your insurer what caused it.
Is Boise River flooding covered by a normal policy?
Standard homeowners policies generally exclude flood, which is usually a separate policy. Your own policy decides, so ask your insurer before there is a warning.
Drying in a dry climate
Does dry air mean the house dries itself?
Only at the surface. Water inside a slab, a wall cavity or insulation leaves slowly, and winter windows stay shut. Dehumidifiers and air movers do the work, and meters show when it is done.
How do you know when it is dry?
The readings match a dry reference from an unaffected wall in your own house and stay there on repeat visits. Surface feel is not a measure, because a stud can be wet behind dry-feeling drywall.
Cost and insurance
What does restoration cost?
We print no dollar figure, because we found no Boise price we could source. The wet area, the water category, the materials and the drying days decide the quote, and your own price is put in writing before work starts.
Does insurance cover a wet basement?
It depends on the cause. Groundwater seepage is often excluded, flood needs a separate policy and sewer backup is often an endorsement. Sudden pipe failures are more often covered. Your insurer decides.
Contractors and mold
Does Idaho license water damage restoration?
Idaho registers contractors rather than licensing them, under Idaho Code Title 54, Chapter 52. Whether drying alone needs registration we could not confirm. Ask any company if it is registered with the Idaho Contractors Board and check the state lookup.
Is there a state mold licence?
We found none, though our only source was weak. Ask any mold company for its registration status, insurance, a written scope and its training, and consider an independent assessor.
